When to stop food and water for dog before a long plane flight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

Me boyfriend and I are bringing our dog on a 3.5hr flight and we wanted to know the safest and most effective way to make sure she doesn't have to use the bathroom while on the plane, like how long before the flight should we stop giving her food and water.

Don't feed her after midnight the night before you travel. Take up the water that morning and walk her just before you go to the airport and before you board or load her (if possible). When you get to your destination, wait an hour or two then feed and water half what you normally offer. Feed the remainder after an hour if there is no vomiting. This can happen with travel.
