My puppy bit me! Rabies shot needed? Is GSD puppy biting normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered

Hi , Today I was playing with my puppy and he bit me on my finger . My finger bled for like 20 secs . It's just a minor wound as if a needle pricked my finger. My puppy is a 70 days old German Shepherd and is not vaccinated against rabies yet . My concern is that should I get myself an anti rabies shot or I ll be fine without it . Also my puppy bites alot ..Is this a normal behavior for German Shepherd pups .. Thanks in advance

Hello, sorry to hear about Marshal. If your puppy has not been bit by another stray dog or wildlife then it should not be infected with rabies and thus you are likely not infected with rabies. Your puppy is still too your to receive his rabies vaccine, but you should always practice safety measures and not allow him to be around other dogs whom you don't know their vaccine history. Ultimately, you should wash your bite wound thoroughly and seek medical attention for your bite wound. Puppies can have a biting behavior although it should not be tolerated or encouraged. This means you should avoid this behavior, stop giving him attention if he shows this behavior, redirect this behavior to a toy and above all never punish him as this can make the behavior worse. Hope this helps and best of luck!!

Chances of him being infected with rabies is extremely low if he did not come in contact with other dogs/animals but i can't rule it out completely, it's up to you, if you want to be extra careful i would recommend the rabies injection.
