My dog is switching seizure meds. Is it too soon to reduce Epirepress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 7 months old

Hi my dog is on Epirepress and is been changed to levetiracetam from tonight. I have been told to reduce the Epirepress on Thursday at night time to half a tablet but with him only been on Levetiracetam since Tuesday night (1 1/2 tablet) they are telling me to reduce the Epirepress by half from then on, is that not too soon to reduce a tablet as the other won't be in his system ? I am worried he may have fits, please can you advise me on this thanks

You should contact your vet to confirm the directions as we at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach are not able to prescribe or alter medications for pets not under our direct care. Levetiracetam is fast acting and effective quite quickly and epirepress is slow to leave the system so it is often possible to change over relatively quickly, monitoring closely for any neurologic signs
