My puppies have bloody, watery, dark yellow stool. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 67 lbs

My dog had her first litter 3 1/2 weeks ago. She had 11 puppies and 10 are still alive. Their stool has become very dark yellow with streaks of blood and watery. I decided to give them puppy mush to see if it would maybe solidify the stool. But i just noticed the red in the stool and that makes me nervous. Of course i googled and got different answers, now I'm terrified. What do i need to do?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You need to take a sample of poo from several puppies to your veterinarian for a stool analysis. We usually recommend administering a deworming product to puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. This should take care of the problem. Take care.

There are many causes of an animal getting stool like this. It could be intestinal parasites. Even if your vet has already tested and given a general dewormer they could still have parasites. Not all parasites are consistent shedders, so they could have a negative stool sample but still be infected. They could also have had a parasite that is not killed by the general dewormer and need something else. This could be dietary. Whether they are not tolerating the food or they received a treat or human food that did not agree with their stomach. The other cause can be from something they picked up from outside. WIth how old Lucky is I do recommend a veterinarian. Puppies can get sick and decline quickly so making sure he is adequately hydrated, checking again for parasites and treating appropriately is very important.
