Dog has IVDD, still in pain after Meloxicam. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with ivdd by an emergency room vet last night who suspects he has it. I can't afford an mri or surgery right now. She gave me meloxicam oral suspension but he's obviously still in a lot of pain. Please help me relieve my dogs pain.

There are a few more medications that can be given such as tramadol and gabapentin, both are prescription only, you can get them from your normal vet. the most important factor for good recovery is cage rest for at least two weeks, in most cases neither MRI nor surgery are needed.
