Why is my dog straining to pee, has a swollen penis, and drinks a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 55 lbs

The last few hours my dog has been straining to urinate. He will push so hard that he ends up having to go poop. While doing his business I noticed his penis came out and wouldn't retract back in for a minute. His penis is back in but now it's swollen and he is still having trouble urinating. He is also drinking a lot more water. I've tried putting lube, sugar and giving him a cold bath for the swelling but it hasn't helped. No pus or blood coming or if it and he feels alittle warm.

This is very concerning indeed. I would highly recommend taking Rufio in to your local vet or ER vet right away. He may have a urinary blockage due to a Urinary stone, which can be life threatening. A vet visit asap is highly advised. If a stone is present they will need to catheterize him and potentially surgery may be needed to remove the stone. I do hope things work out for your pet Rufio. Best wishes and take care.
