My dog is shaking, stomach hard, won't lie down. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

My dog is shaking and his stomach is really hard. He has pooped twice, but refuses to drink. He is not his normal self. He will sit but he won't lie down. He seems like he's in a lot of pain. We have been at the lake, so I don't know if he drank any bad water? He is a corgi Pomeranian and he is about 7 years old.

Hi there and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Simba is not feeling well. It is hard to say exactly what is going on with her sight unseen, and there can be many causes to the symptoms you have described. Ingestion of a toxin, internal organ dysfunction like liver or kidney disease, and pancreatitis are just a few possibilities. I agree with you that it sounds like she is experiencing some pain and should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible so a diagnosis can be made and treatment can get underway so she starts feeling better soon. Best wishes and best of luck to you and Simba!

I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian immediately. This could be something simpler but a distended and painful abdomen can also be a sign of gastric dilitation. When the stomach gets distended with gas it can twist which is an emergency. He could also have a blockage. Other concerns would be a splenic rupture. It may be something less serious but with these clinical signs I treat like an emergency until proven otherwise.
