My dog has a red, scabby bump on her butt cheek. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 153 lbs

My dog has a red fairly symmetrical bump on her butt cheek. It is a little smaller than a dime and has hair. It's been there 3-5 days. She is a 1.5 year old boxer mix. You will see that she scratched at it as the top now has a small scab on top. She has had normal behavior and appetite. She did not mind us touching or even squeezing it until I cleaned the scab and put antibiotic ointment on the scab today ( normal behavior as she doesn't ever like when I do this)

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From your description and the picture you attached, it looks like a small benign growth on the skin. Kim's is a young dog so most likely this is a histiocytoma. However, I would err on the side of caution and have your vet conform whether it is benign or malignant. Your vet can insert a small needle into the mass and look at the cells under the microscope to get a better idea of what the mass is. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have. I am also available via consultation if needed.
