Dog fight injury: Fluid sac on my dog's ribs. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 48 lbs

My older dog attacked my border collie the other day. She had her down on her back attacking her ribs and stomach area. No blood all seemed fine. Now the border collie has a tennis ball size fluid feeling sac on her rib cage area. She doesn't seem to mind me touching it and doesn't seem to be in pain. Should I be concerned?

Poor Roxy. I would recommend taking Roxy to a vet to make sure the area that is swollen is nothing to be concerned about. After trauma it is possible a hematoma (blood filled pocket), broken rib, damaged muscle or even abscess (infection) are possible. A vet can aspirate the mass and make sure it is nothing serious or if it needs medications dispense it. Hope that helps. thanks for using pet coach
