What causes dog hair loss on tummy and joints with no itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 10 lbs

Hi! Nugget have small spots on her tummy and joints lately where there are no hair. They don't seem to itch or bother her at all. There are also no fleas or ticks on her. What could this be? Thank you!

The picture shows moth eaten alopecia areas which can indicate a mite problem (Demodexx mites-non-contagious) or she could have a flea allergy (even if you aren't seeing them). If she isn't on flea prevention I would start by getting her on that. Then I would consider having her skin tested for mites if the hair loss areas worsen or don't resolve within a week. Since she isn't itching there really is no need to treat her with any special shampoos or anything at this point. I hope that Nuggets hair can return to normal soon. Best wishes and take care.
