Why does my dog have chronic wounds and abscesses after a snake bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

Dog was bitten by copper head about 4 months ago, was treated for that, but has gone through a long road of not getting better. She now has a wound that seems to continue growing on her side. Samples have been sent to multiple universities and no one can find any answers. She's been through numerous antibiotics and nothing has helped. She continues to have abscess grow all over her body that eventually burst and leak puss. The wound she has now started as an abscess.

Poor Peanut! It sounds like a very difficult case to diagnose. If she hasn't been to a dermatologist then I recommend you have her examined by a board certified dermatologist. I am not sure what type of samples were sent to be analyzed but she should have a culture and biopsy of the lesions submitted for testing. She could have an autoimmune disease or possibly lymphoma that has not been diagnosed. So sorry that she is going through all this and hope you find an answer soon. If there is a veterinary school near you then you could also have her evaluated by a dermatologist there.
