Why is my senior dog with kidney disease vomiting and bloody stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 13 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My dachshund is 13, already has kindney disease from when he was young. He strated vomiting foamy, mucousy bile yesterday, that subsided bUT now he's having loose dark stools, looks bloody at times. He doesn't have much pep but to be fair, he's slowed down a lot over the last 2 yrs. He hasn't eaten anything in almost 24 hrs. He usually eat boiled rice and chicken. I plan to take him to the vet but also want to be prepared that perhaps this is end stage kidney failure or something more serious.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jackson and your other dog are cute!! There are MANY causes for vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. Yes, there is concern for his kidney function because of his history as well as his age. Other causes are: viral or bacterial (even if your other dog doesn't have symptom), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ate something gross outside that isn't agreeing with him, food sensitivity. The blood on the stool indicated inflammation in the colon. I recommend that you consider having him seen today, which would have to be through an ER due to it being Labor Day. The Vet will at a minimum do blood work to check his liver and kidney functions they proceed from there. I hope this helps and I wish Jackson the best!
