Why is my dog itching a dark growth on his leg? What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

I found a dark brown/black growth on dogs left front leg due to his constant itching the area. It looks like a large skin tag.

It looks like the accessory carpal pad as it is colored like the other foot pads. Does he have one on the right front leg too? If so, that is normal, all dogs have those. If there is not one on the other side then you need to take him to the vet for an exam so they can tell you if it's skin tag or a tumor of some kind. It does not look like a skin tag to me. The other option is a tick but it does not appear to be one from the photos as I do not see any legs. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Paw_and_pads.jpg Hope this helps.
