My cat won't open eyes after eye cream. Is it pain or fear of meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I took my cat to the vet yesterday because he had discharge from his eyes and was squinting. He was diagnosed with an eye infection and I was given a cream to put in his eyes. I have been doing it diligently but now he will not open his eyes. They are not stuck together. Are his eyes hurting him or is he afraid I am going to put the medicine in his eyes?

Watch Charlie from across the room when you are not near him. If he keeps his eyes open normally and isn't rubbing them then he is probably only closing them when you approach because of the medications. But if he won't open his eyes at all, has discharge or is rubbing them then I would have him rechecked to make sure he isn't painful.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Charlie! Cats can sometime shave a reaction to certain eye ointments. I recommend stopping the eye ointment if they have gotten worse since starting the medication. If his eyes are still bad tomorrow I recommend having him seen on emergency. If stable call your Vet first thing Tuesday morning to see if they want o recheck him or prescribe a different medication. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery for Charlie!
