My dog has a painful, infected growth on his leg. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 75 lbs

My boxer has had a skin tag on his left front leg forever. It's grown into a very large, cold, pink, squishy growth over the last year but I was told it's nothing to worry about. Last week he must've scraped it on something outside because it had a sore on it so we've been cleaning it but now it is turning whiteish yellow (more white) on the entire bottom half and he seems to be in pain. I have no money for a vet as I'm closing on a house purchase in 2 weeks. What do I do? I have a picture.

This growth looks like it's getting infected at the bottom. I recommend having this removed as soon as you are able. It has a small attachment to the leg so it should be able to be removed easily. Hank may get sick if the infection isn't controlled. You can keep it clean in the meantime but if it gets worse it will need treatment soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Hank.
