My dog has a blood clot in his eye after playing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 5 months old

Hello, my dog is a male Shitzu, and today we were playing and he was very excited. So I think I may have accidentally scratched his eye, because he got what it seems like a blood cloth in his left eye. He doesn't seem to be feeling any tips of discomfort or pain. He's my first pet so I don't know how to proceed. Any help is appreciated!

Judging by the picture it looks as if Pompeu has a burst blood vessel in his eye. This usually occurs from increased pressure in the eye or some type of injury or trauma. With time the blood will go away and there is nothing you need to do for the eye. If you notice any discharge, your dog is holding the eye closed, or if the eye seems swollen at all, then I would recommend you taking him into see the vet. Otherwise just keep an eye on it and I think he will be fine. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
