Did my dog's adrenal tumor cause pancreatitis? Could I have prevented his death?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 8 months old | 17 lbs

My sweet dog died a month ago, diagnosis was pancreatitis, peritonitis, tumor on adrenal gland, and heart symptoms. All happened within a 30 hour period. 12 1/2 year old mostly Chihuahua and some terrier mix. Does tumor set off the pancreatitis? I plague myself in guilt that I did not bring him to vet earlier that day when vomiting began. I feel somehow I could have prevented his death.

Poor Monte. It is possible that the tumor could have caused the pancreatitis but not always. With all of his problems, I honestly don't believe you could have prevented his death even if you had taken him into your vet in the very beginning. All of his conditions were very serious and most incurable even with early treatment. I am so sorry for your loss of this sweet family member. Please don't blame yourself as Monte knows you loved him. You gave him a good long life. Please know you're in my thoughts. Hugs!
