My puppy hasn't pooped after deworming. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 19 days old | 10 lbs

My 6-weeks old puppy took meds for deworming 4 hours and he still hasn't pooped. I also already fed him. Should I be concerned? How long does it take for a puppy to poop after deworming?

It may take several hours. If not passed any feces in 24 hours I would recommend a check up, but Percy will for sure pass feces by that time. Occasional constipation may happen when a large quantity of worms die, you could possibly add some mineral oil/liquid paraffin to the diet (2-5mls would be ok every meal for the next 48hours). Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Hello, sorry to hear about Max. It does appear like there are worms in his stools. Depending on which dewormer you administered it can cause a rapid kill of a high burden of worms which could cause pets to become constipated. As long as he does not have any vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite then you can continue to walk him regularly and offer plenty of water. If you note any of these sings, then he should be evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about Paige! If she is otherwise acting normally (normal energy level, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting) then I wouldn't worry just yet. I would try giving Paige some exercise by walking her, as exercise can often stimulate bowel movements. You can also add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to her food to increase her fiber intake. You can attempt to take her temperature by inserting a thermometer rectally one to two inches after lubricating it with vaseline/ ky jelly/ or other lubricant. A normal temperature is 100 to 102.5. This way you can ensure there is no fever, and often the action will stimulate a puppy to have a bowel movement. If she still is not having a bowel movement tomorrow or she develops vomiting/lethargy/decreased appetite then a visit to the vet is recommended.
