My dog is lethargic, vomiting, not eating. When should I go to the ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 50 lbs

My dog, who is usually very active, has been sleeping all day. He threw up a decent amount this morning and has gotten sick several times over the past few weeks. He now has discharge coming from his eyes, has not eaten since last night and has had nothing to drink since this morning. Should we be worried/taking him to the emergency?

Yes, i would definitely be taking odie in as soon as possible. It is likely he is dehydrated and nauseous and may need intravenous fluids alongside diagnosis. Obstruction from swallowing foreign bodies and severe gastroenteritis or pancreatitis would be high on the list of suspicions

Poor Jack! It sounds like he's quite sick. Vomiting, not eating, and acting lethargic can be caused by a number of different problems. Some possible causes would include a GI problem like pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction, a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or ingestion of something toxic. Because this sounds like a potentially life-threatening problem, I would recommend taking Jack to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. The veterinarian there can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment. If you're not sure where to go, try calling your regular vet's office - their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest ER or an on-call doctor for emergencies.
