My senior dog with kidney disease is weak. How to reduce phosphorus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 15 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

My pomeranian is almost 16 years old and was dx. with kidney disease in 2015. She has been on aluminium hydroxide since being dx. Recently she has been weaker and not as steady on her feet. Is there something else she can take besides the alum hydrox to reduce the phosphorus? She is on holistic meds as well Sub Q fluids every other day

It would be important to rerun get bloods to determine if it is the elevated phosphorous that is contributing to the signs and not any other complication or additional conditions. There are additional phosphate binders, specialised diets and tonics such as pronefra but it would be important to fully assess her bloods, current medications, diet and supplements before adding or changing anything
