When will my female dog go into heat after having a litter of puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 8 lbs

I have a female chihuahua that has already had a litter of successful puppies. Her pups are 12 wks and 2 days old. My question is when should she be in heat? I am not wanting to breed her again until her 3rd heat cycle, possibly. I was told between 5 and 6 wks old for the pups. My male dog has tried to mate with her on and off since then and still today!

Dogs come into heat twice a year, so it is usually 4 months after having puppies. However, there is quite a range on when heat can happen, and every individual dog is different, so it is possible that Daisy could be in heat right now. If you don't want her to get bred on her next heat cycle, then you will need to keep both dogs completely separated since you cannot guarantee that you will know when she is in heat without regular hormone testing. Dogs don't always show signs of being in heat.
