Considering saw palmetto for my neutered dog's prostate. Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 37 lbs

I am thinking of trying saw palmetto tincture on my dog for an enlarged prostrate and difficulty urinating and defacating. He is a 13 year old beagle, approximately 37 pounds. He is active, eats well, walks daily with no difficulty. I bought saw palmetto tincture, alcohol-free, 2000 mg. No idea how many droppers to give daily. Previously from another site I was told 1:2-1:3: 0.5-2.0 ml per 10kg (20 lb), divided daily and diluted

Saw Palmetto tincture has really only shown benefits in dogs with testosterone induced prostatic enlargement. This would only be in male dogs that are intact and not neutered. You indicated in your pet info that Rusty is neutered. This supplement is not likely to help him. This supplement can also be dangerous and cause kidney problems. It should be used under the supervision of a holistic veterinarian in order to make sure you are diluting it properly and not overdosing. It is also a good idea to check the kidney function first with blood work. A pet of Rusty's size should only have a maximum of about 20 mg per day and your solution is much stronger. You should take the product to your vet for guidance, but, again- it is not likely to help if your dog is already neutered.
