My dog's bloodshot eye keeps recurring. Is it pink eye or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

My dog supposedly had pink eye a few months ago and the her eye was blood shot again so I took her to the vet and the prescribed the same drops. It transferred to the other eye again. I'm assuming it's some kind of infection. How should I go about dealing with this? Does she need to see an eye specialist?

Infectious conjunctivitis is not common in dogs and unless she is going to doggie day care or is in contact with many dogs it is unlikely that she has contracted an infection twice. More likely would be allergic conjunctivitis or another eye disease like anterior uveitis. I would recommend rechecking with your veterinarian first. If they see anything unusual they may recommend referral to an ophthalmologist.

If Chloe has had a full ophthalmic exam and nothing was abnormal, it could potentially be allergies causing redness to her eyes. If she pulls on a leash or harness a lot sometimes this can also cause bloodshot eyes. If she was only tested for dry then you may want to consider asking for a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to have a full work up done if you're still concerned about her eyes. It is difficult to see in the picture but if her eyes are really red then she should be examined by a vet right away. She could have glaucoma, corneal ulcers, or an infection that needs to be treated. Glaucoma can cause loss of vision if not treated quickly. Dogs have a third eyelid that will sometimes be visible when the dog has an eye problem so you may be seeing the third eyelid covering her eye, if you aren't able to see her eye. Hope she gets better soon!

Nova's eyes do look red - it seems like her third eyelid is elevated on both sides. This can be a sign of irritation even though her eyes don't seem to be bothering her, and she could have conjunctivitis secondary to an infection or allergies, inflammation in her eyes, or even abrasions on the surface of her eyes. If her eyes continue to look red, if there is discharge, or if she is squinting or pawing at her face you should see your vet for an exam.
