Why is my bulldog squinting with eye discharge and an odd eyelid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 65 lbs

My English Bulldog was squinting and seemed uncomfortable this morning when he woke up. He usually has a small amount of discharge in the morning, but today he had a lot. I cleaned his eyes then pried them open to examine them and noticed his bottom eyelid doesn't look right. I'll attach a photo. What is that?

That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the picture you have provided and the description you've written, this could be related to an eye injury / corneal ulcer. I would also be worried about something lodged in the eye somewhere that could be causing the irritation. On the lower eyelid in the picture, it is difficult to tell for sure but what you are seeing may just be bubbles from the discharge in the eye. They also have a mass-like appearance so I would also be suspicious of small masses that have developed. With his age, I would suspect those are just bubbles and not masses and that he is dealing with an eye infection, eye trauma or foreign object stuck somewhere in the eye. I would recommend he get examined by his veterinarian in order to have additional tests performed to rule out a corneal ulcer and find out why the eye is uncomfortable. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any other questions or concerns that you may have. I am also available via phone or text consultation if needed.
