How to feed & care for my dog with hip dysplasia to avoid surgery?

hello.....my boy has hip dysplasia from the time of his birth...since then he has recovered a lot...i just wanted to ask since it is an incurable problem.....what should be the best food with which he can strengthen his bones without gaining much weight....pls suggest what should be taken care of during hip dysplasia...i dont want him to undergo any surgery because they dont give the gaurantee that he will be alright after the surgery.....he is currently 3 yrs old.....thanks

It's good that you are trying to make sure Jasper is comfortable! I would feed him a diet formulated for large breed dogs, you could even consider a joint specific diet such as Hills j/d or Purina JM through your veterinarian. I would also consider getting him on a joint supplement with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate as well as Omega 3 farty acids. Depending on his comfort level you should talk to your veterinarian on whether an anti-inflammatories would be helpful long term as well. Good luck!
