Why does my dog's chronic vaginitis keep coming back after treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 5 years and 9 months old | 100 lbs

My 6 year old German Shepherd has chronic vaginitis, we been the vet SEVERAL times to no avail, the antibiotics work while she's on them and once she's off them it comes back. I'm trying everything I can think of, frequent bathing and trying to wash it, she doesn't let us really look at it. Please help.

I am very sorry to hear about Sahara's problem. It is possible she could have what we called a "recessed vulva". This condition can predispose to skin fold infection, vaginitis and urinary tract infections. I would ask your vet if they think this is a possible cause for your dog. If your dog is overweight, sometimes weight loss will improve this condition. If it is a severe case, then surgery can be performed to help improve the vulvar conformation.
