Is homemade baking soda shampoo safe for my itchy dog's wiry coat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

I'm trying to find a good shampoo for my dog. I would like to make my own if possible. My dog itches alot. He has a wirery coat. His hair is like Toto from the Wizard of Oz. I saw a recipe of oatmeal, baking soda and water. Would that be safe for my dog? I was not sure about this recipe, because someone had said baking soda can cause kidney issues in dogs. Is that true? Any suggestions on any other homemade shampoos?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! Making your own shampoo May be difficult. Baking soda will not cause kidney failure but using improper ratios of ingredients could harm the skin. I would lean towards getting a shampoo such as Duoxo Calm for a maintenance shampoo. This particular shampoo will help strengthen the skin to keep it well hydrated and to prevent dandruff and itching secondary to dry skin. Iv san bernard is another product line that you can use that provides high quality natural shampoos. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns you may have. I am also available via phone or text consultation.
