Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | 65 lbs
I recently adopted a heartworm positive dog from a shelter. In eight days he will begin his immiticide shot treatment. It appears that we caught them fairly early as my 2-3 y/o dog isn't showing signs of lethargy, abnormal exhaustion, or reluctance to exercise at all. He also hasn't developed a cough yet. Would he be able to walk down stairs (from 3rd floor to 1st) after his shots if we only do a couple stairs at a time and slowly? I know he needs crate rest.

Congratulations on adopting Buddha! As you mentioned, crate rest is crucial to recovery from heartworm disease and allowing him to walk down 2 flights of stairs is certainly not ideal. However, carrying a 65 pound dog down two flights of stairs several times per day to go outside sounds like an impossible undertaking. If it is not possible for Buddha to stay in his crate on the first floor, you may not have any other option aside from a slow walk on a leash down the stairs. Again, it is not an ideal situation, but sometimes you just have to make the best of it. I hope that all goes well for Buddha's heartworm treatments and recovery!
