My dog's anal lump won't go away after vet treatment. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 34 lbs

My dog has had impacted anal glands before but this time the vet says it is something different. She drew 38cc of blood out of the lump and gave us antibiotics for him to take for 2 weeks. The swelling has gone done some but you can still see and feel a lumpy mass on the left side of his anus. It doesn't seem to hurt him as he will let me touch it. Do you have any thoughts or ideas of what this could be? He is a 8-1/2 year old beagle mix

I am sorry to hear that! It may be that the infection is still going on - you may need a longer course of the antibiotic or perhaps a different one. I would recommend having them expressed again to see if there is still debris present. I would also want to double check and make sure there is not a mass present in the area:( You can ask for a biopsy to be done if the lump seems unrelated to the infection. I hope this helps and that it is nothing more than a persistent infection!
