Are dog dips safe for my pet? What are better flea/tick solutions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

What is the process with most vets when a dog gets dipped? Can you smell the product or are there any changes of the fur?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don't believe in using any dips anymore since we have such great flea/tick products and other ways to treat mange or other skin problems. Using dips is very antiquated and should be avoided at all costs in my opinion. We have gone away from dips starting in about the mid 1990's when flea/tick products starting coming out. Also we have learned how to treat mange and other skin problems with newer drugs and techniques where dips are no longer necessary. But to answer your question, yes you will smell a residual odor on Duke if he was dipped for a parasite problem, etc. The changes if any of the hair coat should resolve over time if any are apparent. Good luck with Duke. Again I would advise safer methods to treat whatever it is you were having treated.
