My dog killed a rat. Should I be worried about my dog's health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 7.5 lbs

My Yorkie just killed a roof rat that was living in the rocks by my pond. The rat made a run for it and my Yorkie was faster and killed it. Is there anything I should do now?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Good job Jackson. Probably not but I would monitor Jackson closely since the rat could've scratched or bitten him somewhere. Rats and other rodents don't transmit rabies so that is not a concern. I would just watch for any areas that become swollen, painful, or have some discharge which could indicate infection from the rat scratching/biting. Good luck with Jackson.
