How to tell if my Golden Retriever is overweight and healthy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 90 lbs

Hello, My Golden Retriever appears to be fat, but when he is wet, he appears just husky. How do I know if he is healthy, what weight and should I give him supplements - if so, which ones? Fred

Hi Fred! Male Neutered Golden Retrievers should weigh between 65-75 pounds. 90lbs may be a little overweight for Milo. You should be able to easily feel Milo's ribs but not see them. When you look from above, he should be an hourglass shape. When you look at Milo from the side while he stands, his midsection should have an upward slope. Extra supplements can mean extra calories for Milo, so I would talk to your primary are veterinarian about the possibility of starting Milo on particular supplements based on his need and medical history. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
