My dog is too scared to be caught for training or grooming. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chinese Crested Hairless | Female | unspayed

No matter how much gentle loving care, patience, nurturing we give our new pet for the past 8 months, whoever had her before we received her traumatized her so much so that she will not allow us to pick her up or cuddle with her. She is a Chinese Crested Female 1 year old.. She is so fast that we cannot catch her. How can we even bring her anywhere for training, grooming etc. if we cannot catch her?

I am so sorry this has been your experience. The most important thing is that you do not try to catch her. This will just instill more fear. Wait patiently for Paris to come to you. It may take some time, so be prepared. You might try some lures such as treats or a toy (though she may not even know what a toy is). When she does apporach you, be very quiet and gentle in your approach to her. Praise her quietly and do not reach for her. Let her decide, when she is comfortable enough, to reach out to you. Good luck with this.
