Why is my Pomeranian growing a patch of black fur on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Should I be concerned that my adult dog has started growing a patch of solid black curly fur over his shoulder blades? Hx: Came to us a year ago as a young adult dog, body type and coat appear to be nearly full blooded red Pomeranian, 10 lbs, no health problems, no use of topical meds, his last bath was 2 months ago, no changes to diet or lifestyle. His leash and harness clip together over this area. Thanks you, Beth Jackson and Ted the dog

Hi and thank you for your question! Sometimes dog hair can change in color and texture when they age just like human hair can. I wouldn't worry too much about the hair change unless it appears like he is loosing fur, the skin around the fur is red, inflamed, scabbing, or infected-you will want to see your veterinarian if that is the case.
