My dog has advanced heartworms. Is treatment worth the risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 3 months old | 9 lbs

hi, my dog has heartworms. Is 10 years old, and we presume the heart worms developed a long time ago. We only adopted her 2 years ago. She's small, a pomeranian. She's coughing, has difficulty breathing and has an enlarged heart. Should let her relax or is it worth trying immiticide injections/ other treatments? Is there still hope or is it too risky because there is significant damage to the heart?

The heartworms will kill her if you don't attempt treatment. At least with the treatment there is a chance she will survive. The vet can do a "slow kill" protocol and uses the immiticide injections over a longer period of time. That is what we do here in the States when we have a dog with advanced stage heartworm disease. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes.
