My dog chipped a tooth on a rock. Pulp exposed. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

I was playing fetch with my dog and he lost sight of the ball sonI threw a rock to show him the area it was in and he ran over and bit the rock chipping his back tooth. The pulp looks exposed and is bleeding. Doesn't look like he's in pain though. I feel terrible

Hi there. Even though our pets are very good at masking pain-I will guarantee you that he is in pain. That tooth has exposed nerves and they are just as abundant as the ones in our very own teeth. I recommend taking Shadow in to your veterinarian as soon as you can for a dental workup-they may be able to do a root canal and cap the tooth or possibly pull it entirely if it is not salvageable. You will also be given pain medication to make him more comfortable, especially while eating, in the meantime.
