My dog yelps when peeing, goes rarely, and avoids walks. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 55 lbs

My dog yelps at the start of urination. He will only go once or twice a day. He has no UTI, x-rays are good, otherwise acts normal. He's on an anti-inflamatory and pain meds but so far has not made a difference. No longer interested in going for walks because we think he associates it with pain. Any ideas?

Hi there and thanks for your question. I'm sorry Buddy is having this issue. If he is not neutered, it may be related to a prostate issue. Neutering will help this quite a bit if he is not neutered. Otherwise, if he is an older dog, he may be yelping due to arthritis in his joints as he stands to urinate. This would also help explain his disinterest in walks. I hope this helps!
