Is puppy food okay for my large breed puppy, or should I switch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 108 lbs

For the past days I've been reading that great dane puppies should not be on puppy food due to its nutritional balance doesn't meet their nutritional requirements and they should be on a adult kibble formula. is this true or when is the appropriate time for them to make the transition into adult food? He is currently 8 months and weights approximately 108lbs and has been on Hills Science Large breed puppy kibble. Thank you for your feedback!

Hi there and thank you for your question. There is currently no research out there hat supports this claim. Lance should be on a good quality puppy food until he is about 1 year old- sounds like you have a nice food there (Hills Science Large Breed Puppy). That will do just fine until he is 1 year old. Puppies need lots of extra vitamins and minerals in their diets as well as extra calories to match the amount of energy they are expending on growth which a puppy food contains. I would not change his food to adult just yet. I hope this helps!
