My female budgie is picking on the male. Why are my budgies fighting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 2 years and 4 months old

I have two budgies, both are 2 years old at the moment. One of them is a boy and another is a girl. Usually, whenever I see/play/train them, the female (Horizon) picks at the boy (Zeus). This happens once every 7 minutes (I guess). She beats him up in a sense and rarely does he. They are always fighting and I have seperate bowls and toys for them and lots of space and a HUGE cage for them. I just don't know what the problem is... -Leah

It might be that they don't get along, or your female is being a bit territorial/jealous, especially if this is happening when you are interacting with them. Training one at a time in a separate area may help with any bullying. if you have any nesting material or nests in the cage, removing it may help some with territorial disputes. Placing fake plants, or even clothespins on perches can also add a barrier of 'separation" in smaller enclosures to help your male get away and be picked on less easily.
