My dog's tooth is rotten 10 months after cleaning. Is this normal?

10 months ago, my dog had her last teeth cleaning. I remember being skeptical at the time because her teeth didn't look clean as I would have expected, and her breath was bad. Now I notice one of her back molars looks very rotten and has a large black hole in it and looks really bad compared to the same tooth on the other side. I feel as though this couldn't have happened in just 10 months, and if they had actually cleaned her teeth they would have told me there was a problem. Am I wrong?

Poor Pixel! A lot of periodontal disease can develop in 10 months, so this doesn't necessarily mean that anything was missed or done wrong during Pixel's last dental cleaning. If you're concerned, you could certainly talk with the veterinarian who did the procedure to get his/her thoughts. In any case, it sounds like Pixel definitely needs more dental work now, so I would recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible for a full oral exam so that the rotten tooth can be addressed. If you don't have confidence in the vet who did her last dental cleaning, you could try a different local veterinarian or request referral to a dental specialist if you prefer.
