My GSD and Pyrenees play rough. Are they playing or fighting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 4 months and 23 days old

Tips on telling the difference between my pups playing and actually fighting? My GSD seems to be a rough player. They both growl and take turns barking at each other. My GSD will run up and nip my Great Pyrenees( on the legs or neck scruff) and shake real quick then stop and paw at her. I think they're playing I just want to make sure.

It can be hard to tell when dogs are playing and not fighting. You can listen for deep growling or raised hackles. Also, there shouldn't be visible wounds after playing. I would also watch the Pyrenees for signs that she is not wanting to play, such as trying to get away. Common areas for play fighting are the scruff and legs. Biting on the belly or genitals would be more aggressive than playing.
