I'm getting a 5 month old puppy, that has all his shots and I had a puppy recently passed with the parvo virus what can I do to make sure this puppy won't get it and can an adult dog be a carrier of the parvo virus?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Congratulations on your new puppy! One thing I have learned after being a veterinarian all these years, is when someone says a puppy has had all of its vaccinations, then I say prove it. I want to know how many vaccinations the puppy received , when they were administered, & by who. If a puppy did not receive 3 vaccinations at 8, 12, & 16 weeks, given by a veterinarian, I will consider that pet unvaccinated. If this has been done, then it is very unlikely a pup can come down with Parvo. An adult dog can not be a carrier of Parvo, unless it is still a relatively young adult & has never received all its vaccinations, & comes down with the virus. And it is not forever. Nonetheless, Parvo can stay in the environment for quite a long time that is why it is recommended that a young pup is kept fairly isolated until all three vaccinations have been administered. Take care.
