Could cuterebra removal cause my dog's excessive thirst & weight loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 2 months old

July 22nd I removed a cuterebra from my dogs shoulder. Half way out it ruptured. I did successfully remove the whole thing. It healed up just fine. But ever since she is drinking so much water. Like 8 to 10 cups a day. Peeing all over the floor, and has probably lost half her body weight. Could this be caused from the cuterebra?

It is possible for infection from the wound settled in the kidneys but it is more likely coincidental. Have Missy Belle examined by your veterinarian. Lab work (CBC, chemistry panel and urinalysis) will likely be submitted to assess major organ function and to diagnose systemic infection. A urine culture may be submitted to diagnose urinary tract infection also. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. A complete workup may include abdominal x-rays or ultrasound to assess the urinary tract, to diagnose bladder or kidney stones, and to assess kidney size and architecture.
