My dog has recurring hives. What are non-steroid home remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My dog is covered in hives and has been on and off for the last 3 months the only thing that seems to help is steriods from the vet but I do not want to continue them. The hives are back and are getting worse. Is there anything I can do to help them go away at home ? Benedryl is not working.

I am sorry for Dallas!! I agree it is frustrating when hives return. It is most likely something in the environment this time of year that Dallas is allergic too. I would recommend steroids until the hives are gone. Than I would use anti histamine and anti itch shampoo. Every time Dallas comes inside I would wipe him down with a wet towel to remove any pollen or plant material. Also you can try to leash walk where there are limited plants and brush to prevent his skin from becoming irritated. Hope that helps

I would consider getting Dallas on a hypoallergenic food trial first to rule out a food allergy. Here is a website link that talks about food allergies and what to consider when starting your pet on one. I highly recommend the Royal Canin Ultamino, Royal Canin Skin support or the Hill's Z/D Ultra. Also the California Natural by Natura is comparable to a lot of your prescription brands. Until the food trial can go into effect (can take up to 2 months), I would consider getting Dallas on a high quality flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica) and a long term allergy medicaiton such as Apoquel or Cytopoint injectable. Best wishes with Dallas and I hope that his skins gets better soon. Take care.
