Why is my new 9-week-old Labrador puppy drinking and peeing so much?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 9.2 lbs

My Labrador puppy 9 weeks old, likes to drink water and wee a lot. He has some accidents but as we have only had him two days I understand this will take time. My question is, should I only water him with food to try and stop him wetting his bed and peeing so much or is this typical of a new puppy in a new environment. I'm confused as he seems settled.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.
