My puppy's gums are red, inflamed, bleeding. Is it normal teething?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 5 months and 8 days old | 45 lbs

My 5 month old Siberian Husky's gums seem really red and inflamed. They bled slightly tonight when I tried brushing this teeth. He just lost a canine and his adult teeth are still growing in. Should I be concerned about the inflammation & bleeding or is this "normal" teething? Thank you.

This could definitely be due to teething. They often get irritated and bleeding gums at this time and it's really not a problem. Young dogs almost never have dental disease, so I would not be worried at this time. This problem should resolve in the next two months. It's great that you are brushing!! Keep it up and you will definitely reduce his chances of having teeth and gum disease in the future.

Red gums at the base of the teeth is generally a sign of inflammation of the gums or gingivitis. This is usually caused by a reaction of the gums to bacteria in the mouth. I would consider using pet oral care products and brushing his teeth to see if there are any improvements made, if not he may need a dental cleaning.
