My senior cat's incision isn't healing & has a new lump. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 12.5 lbs

My cat had a breast nodule removed on the 15th and the incision is not healing right and is infected. She started taking clavamox on the 24th. The vet told us on Thursday to spray Gent spray on it to see if that helps it heal. Back in April a nodule was removed from the same spot and we now and to go back in. She is 13 years old. I also found another lump about an inch below the incision near hear last nipple. Do you have any ideas on how to get it to heal? Should we do surgery for the new lump?

Poor Zoe and poor you! It sounds like you both have been through a lot lately. You are right that the incision area looks really red and swollen, and another type of antibiotic may be needed to treat the infection. Taking a culture of the area will help the vet identify what bacteria are present and subsequently which antibiotic would be best to treat the infection. As for the new lump, yes having it surgically removed would be best, as 90% of mammary tumors in cats are malignant. You can speak with your vet about removal of that lump.
