Is Levocetirizine a safe Zyrtec substitute for my dog's allergies?

I have been giving my dog Zyrtec 10 mg for her allergies for a while but ran out. Can I substitute with Levocetirizine 5 mg?

No, I wouldn't recommend doing this without speaking to your vet about it. That's because recommending to do this requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, I cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Zoey. Give your vet a call, and they can let you know if Levocetirizine 5mg is safe to give her.

Both drugs are used off-label - meaning that they are not approved for veterinary use, so it's important to only use them as recommended by your veterinarian. Xyzal has a similar drug to Zyrtec, but is different enough that a new dose would have to be calculated by your veterinarian. Every year in August my dog starts his allergies with his itchy skin and eyes,,if it gets too bad my vet will order prednisone orally which does help. But can I ward off some of the symptoms with Allegra or Zyrtec?

In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Dakota. Yes, you can give cetirizine as needed. Be aware that if you use it constantly there is a chance he will become tolerant to it and will no longer work. It should also not be used in animals that have any underlying kidney or liver disease. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Cetirizine HCl is generic zyrtec, which is an antihistamine. It is not FDA approved in dogs, though a lot of Vets use it off label. This means we do not know a lot about it in animals. Cetirizine appears well tolerated in dogs and cats. Vomiting or hypersalivation after dosing have been reported in some dogs. Drowsiness has been reported in small dogs at higher dosages. Do not use pseudoephedrine (e.g., Zyrtec-D 12 Hour®). There hasn't been any liver or kidney damage reported even with overdoses. I recommend it in my allergic patients and have seen no side effects and some dogs are on it long term. I tell them that antihistamines should be used on a regular, ongoing basis in animals that respond to them. They work better if used before exposure to an allergen. Zyrtec may cause less drowsiness/sleepiness than some other antihistamines, but this can still happen. It can be given on an empty stomach, but if your animal vomits or drools, try giving wi

I suggest you trust your veterinarian who knows your dog and her medical history. Your vet can adjust dosages with this knowledge. We here can only give general recommendations which will be in the region of average treatment. If your veterinarian determines this dosage to be correct for YOUR dog then this is what he believes your dog needs. This, however cannot be used as a general guideline for other dogs he or any other vet has not seen in person. So, no, you do not have to be worried.

Allergies can be frustrating to diagnose since they can have multiple causes (inhaled, food, contact). Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Discuss food elimination trials and allergy testing and if antihistamine use is indicated, he or she can give you a proper dose, The medication may provide some relief but your task is to try to determine what your dog is allergic to and decrease or eliminate it. Monitor her for side effects including lethargy and weakness, and if you see those signs, have her seen by a vet right away. Best of luck.
