Why is my dog scooting? Is it worms or anal glands after Drontal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 24 lbs

Hi, i gave my dogs drontal on 15th July but now realise that it is a treatment rather than a preventative. One of the dogs is scooting. I have two more drontal tablets (One for each dog) am I ok to give them these and then get a preventative worm tablet. They had Bravecto this week and also wear Scallibor collars as we are going to Europe with them.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You are correct, Drontal is treatment for a parasite infection, not a preventative. Bravecto prevents from fleas and ticks as does the Scallibor collar. They probably don't need to have both, unless fleas and ticks are super bad where you live. You can give the 2nd dose of drontal that you have but I don't think your one dog is scooting from worms. The most common reason for scooting is impacted, full or infected anal glands. I recommend that you have a vet check them today or Monday. If they are impacted or infected sometimes they can rupture. I hope this helps! Good luck!
