Why is my cat licking his butt, making gurgling noises, and in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My cat is licking his butt and doesn't want you to touch it. He's also making weird gurgling noises when he licks it, which makes me think he's in pain. Please help!

Hello, sorry to hear about Vinnie. It looks as though he has a small mass or a small amount of rectum prolapsed. Either or could can definitely be painful and thus Vinnie makes the grunting noises and he does not want you to touch it. This is concerning enough that I would have him evaluated by your veterinarian today. If it is a mass such as an abscess then it needs to be addressed today as well. Likewise if he has a prolapsed rectum then it needs to be addressed today. Hope this helps and best of luck
